This structured management approach fosters a sense of responsibility and ownership among residents, contributing to their recovery journey. Residents of Oxford Houses include men, women, and women with children, all of whom must be committed to remaining drug and alcohol-free. The houses are structured to accommodate individuals coming from various backgrounds, including those who have recently completed treatment programs or those seeking a stable environment after incarceration. An Oxford House refers to self-managed recovery residences designed to support individuals in recovery from substance use disorders. These residences focus on creating a supportive atmosphere that encourages personal growth and accountability, which is essential for those seeking to rebuild their lives after addiction.

Recovery Responsibility Replication

By running Oxford House on a democratic basis, members of Oxford House become able to accept the authority of the group because the group is a peer group. Each member has an equal voice in the group and each has an opportunity to relearn responsibility and to accept decisions once they are made. The house members will invite applicants to the house for an interview where they will ask questions and then decide as a group who they will vote into the house as a new member. Interviews are usually held in person, but can also be done over the phone. There are six house officers in each Oxford House, elected by the members to support the operations of the house.

This structure not only promotes accountability but also enhances the overall stability of the living environment, contributing to a successful recovery experience. Oxford Houses also facilitate job opportunities by helping residents connect with local employment resources, allowing them to rebuild their lives and regain independence. Without professional staff, residents help each other by sharing their experiences and offering mutual support, fostering accountability and encouragement in maintaining sobriety. This collaborative approach creates a strong community bond for individual recovery and personal growth.

• (10 for men, 6 for women) Each house is a member of the Oxford organization, but it is run independently by its residents and their elected officers.
• An Oxford House is managed by a publicly supported nonprofit organization that operates primarily under the principles of Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
• The House is theirs and in no way is it part of any other organization.
• Each member has one vote, no matter how long they’ve been there.

Any Group of recovering individuals can start a new Oxford House. All they need to do is to find a house to rent in the name of the Group, and apply to Oxford House, Inc., for a charter. Any recovering alcoholic or drug addict can apply to get into any Oxford House by filling out an application and drug addiction treatment being interviewed by the existing members of the House. The application is then considered by the membership of the House and if there is a vacancy and if 80% of the members approve, the applicant is accepted and moves in.

Oxford House, Inc. provides technical assistance to foster the expansion of the Oxford House Model. Providing a beacon of stability and growth for individuals and families on the journey to lasting recovery. Experience has shown that Oxford Houses work for both men and women, but not in the same house. Yes, by simply writing or calling Oxford House to ask for a Charter application. Once that application is completed and received by Oxford House, Inc., a “Conditional Charter” will be granted to the house at no cost. Beds are provided in each house as well as other necessary furniture.

• Through chapters individual houses are able to share their experience, strength and hope with each other to assure compliance with the Oxford House concept and its respected standardized system of operations.
• The houses are self-supporting and democratically run so every house does their own interviews and votes on new member admittance.
• There are over 3500 self-sustaining Oxford Houses in the United States and more than 24,000 individuals in recovery living in these houses at any one time during the year.
• This structured approach not only reinforces individual accountability but also cultivates a sense of shared responsibility, essential for sustaining long-term recovery.
• Once accepted, an Oxford House member can stay as long as they like, provided they stay drug and alcohol free, are not disruptive, and pay their share of house expenses.

Rent your home as an Oxford House and become a vital part in our mission to save lives. Find a house, fill out the application, and call a house to schedule an interview. Any member who drinks alcohol or uses drugs will be immediately expelled. Each member pays EES (Equal Expense Share) which includes the total amount of rent due for the month, utilities and basic staples for the house.

The integration of AA meetings within Oxford Houses provides residents with additional resources and community support, reinforcing their commitment to sobriety and fostering a sense of belonging. Oxford House set out for national expansion by hiring the first outreach workers to start opening houses in other states. While no one is ever asked to leave an Oxford House without cause, some individuals will simply outgrow living in an Oxford House. They will return to their families; they may start new families; they may simply move into another living situation. The concept and the standardized, democratic, self-supported Oxford House system of operations itself are far more persuasive than any individual. Be honest and straight-forward when sharing the Oxford House concept with others.

House members will vote on anything that pertains to the house. Each member has one vote, no matter how long they’ve been there. It doesn’t matter if they’ve been living in the house for one day or for multiple years.
